There and Back Again – The Adventures of a Lost Dog

Hi humans! I’m Tillman and this is me :

That picture is from my younger years.  Anywho! I am going to tell you about a story that happened a little while ago.  I was hanging with two of my owners – Mary, and Courtney.  They were taking me on a walk – one of my favorite things in the whole wide world.  I just love getting outside and exploring and listening to the sounds of nature:

We always walk by a creek.  It’s pretty, but I can’t swim…which is surprising for a yellow lab!  We almost made it back home.  It was weird though, I had felt the grip on my collar and leash loosen.  I looked back and my owner had accidentally dropped the leash.  I saw my chance.  I was off!!

I was on my own! Free to explore the world of suburbia.  My first stop was teasing all the dogs behind fences.

I was enjoying myself.  I walked around for a while near the creek and the woods.  It was starting to get dark.  I decided it would be a good time for a nap so I curled up underneath a nice, big tree.  When I got up the sun was shining!

It was a new day!  I decided to do a little more exploring.  I wandered over to this tree which had this piece of paper on it.

I thought to myself…that looks like me!  Then I realized, that it was me!  Now I can’t really read at all, but I think it was important.  That was my house in the background of that picture.  I really missed it, but I was free.  I started to think about my owners…my family and how much fun I have at home.

And for some reason, the song “Angel” by Sarah McLachlan plays in my head.  I knew that I had to make my way back home.  The path I was near was very familiar to me.  I just kept following it.  That’s when I heard it.  My name.  I saw my owner start running toward me, and I ran toward her…but then I saw a squirrel so I started to run the other way.  She caught my leash however and I was not able to chase the squirrel.
